Choosing Decking for a Coastal Environment
The Shetlands project demanded a material that could endure salt air, heavy winds, and high moisture levels, conditions that would rapidly degrade ordinary timber. The specification required a high-performance composite board with UV resistance, excellent dimensional stability, and strong resistance to corrosion and moisture ingress. The design also needed to preserve a natural look that complements the dramatic coastal scenery.

Material & Installation Strategy for Longevity
To meet the challenge, the team selected a high-grade composite with robust capping and reinforced core. Hidden-clip fixings and corrosion-resistant hardware were used to avoid any metallic staining or rust. The substructure was elevated and ventilated to allow for drainage and airflow, minimizing moisture retention beneath the boards. The result is a resilient deck built to last in one of the UK’s most exposed environments.

“The service I received from the Envirobuild team was first class and this is also true for the product. I went for the Frontier range, the deck looks luxurious and has stood up well to the wild winter weather we have in Shetland."
