Why We Replaced the Softwood Decking

The rooftop terrace had previously used softwood that demanded frequent refinishing and treatment. Because the balcony is exposed and heavily used for socialising and sunbathing, the client wanted a solution with minimal upkeep. We specified Hyperion Frontier Iroko composite decking, which brings the look of natural timber minus the constant maintenance overhead — ideal for rooftop applications.

Installation Approach & Substructure Details

To protect the roof membrane and ensure a stable deck, we installed rubber support pads under 28–40 mm adjustable pedestals. These allowed us to level the frame on the uneven surface. The substructure used 100% recycled Manticore plastic lumber joists (50×100 mm), offering a long-lasting, rot-proof foundation. The boards were then fitted neatly with hidden fixings, delivering a clean, durable rooftop decking surface.

“Superb service from start to finish. Am very happy we chose this over a traditional wooden deck... it’s still looking great and I’ve had to do no maintenance at all.”
