Designing a Deck for Daytime and Evening Use
The client wanted more than just a daytime lounge, they also planned to use the space after dark, including for projector nights. With a tricky angled layout and delicate landscaping, the design needed to be sleek, versatile, and functional under lighting. The deck was wrapped around an existing summer house and built to accentuate the geometry, while allowing for integrated illumination that doesn’t overwhelm the visual aesthetic.
Lighting Integration & Material Choices
To achieve the lighting effect, LEDs were embedded directly into the decking boards so that the surface glows subtly at night. The project used Oak Hyperion Pioneer composite decking to provide a consistent aesthetic day and night. The substructure design accommodated hidden wiring, and the finish was balanced to highlight the boards’ colour under both natural and artificial light.
