Designing a Sundeck for a Town Centre-to-Seafront Regeneration

Montague Gardens forms the centrepiece of a £3.1m regeneration project connecting Worthing town centre to the seafront, replacing the site's old tarmac with a green, community-focused public space. At the heart of the design sits a performance and sundeck area: a multi-use platform built to host everything from council-organised events to spontaneous seafront gatherings, sitting alongside the garden's new living wall and illuminated "Worthing" place sign. The brief called for decking that could handle heavy public footfall and coastal weather while staying low-maintenance for the council's long-term upkeep.

Why Frontier Teak Was the Right Fit for a Coastal Public Space

Frontier composite decking in Teak was chosen for its rich, warm tone that complements the garden's soft planting and living wall without competing with the bold "Worthing" signage on the stage behind it. As a public realm installation exposed to sea air, foot traffic from performers and event crews, and the unpredictable British weather, the deck also needed to perform: Frontier's dual-sided board offers strong slip resistance underfoot, even when wet, and its rot- and splinter-resistant composite build means no sanding, staining or annual treatment — a genuine advantage for a council managing a busy town centre space on a public maintenance budget.

What a fabulous, sunny afternoon in our beautiful town to celebrate the grand opening of Montague Gardens – and it was fantastic to see the new space already buzzing with people enjoying the new seating, planting and stage performances.
